The Police K-9 Unit is a specialized team comprised of a certified K-9 and its assigned officer handler. Together, they provide valuable support to patrol operations and enhance the department's ability to protect the community through specialized training and capabilities.
Our K-9 teams are trained in the detection of narcotics, tracking missing or endangered persons, locating evidence, conducting area and building searches, and assisting officers during critical incidents. The officer handler is responsible for the care, training, deployment, and overall well-being of the K-9, ensuring the team maintains the highest standards of professionalism and operational readiness.
Our department's K-9s are not trained or utilized as apprehension or bite dogs. Their mission is centered on detection, tracking, search, and recovery operations, providing a safe and effective resource that supports law enforcement while minimizing the need for force whenever possible.
